Brain cells begin to die within minutes. Another type of stroke is hemorrhagic stroke, which occurs when a blood vessel in the brain leaks or ruptures, causing bleeding in the brain. The blood increases pressure on brain cells, damaging them.

Symptoms

If you suspect that you or someone you know is having a stroke, be sure to note the time symptoms first appeared. Prompt medical intervention improves the effectiveness of recovery following a stroke.

Stroke symptoms may include:

Difficulty speaking and understanding others' speech.A patient who has had a stroke may lose consciousness, experience slurred speech, or be unable to understand what is being said to them.

Numbness, weakness, or paralysis of the face, arm, or leg. These symptoms often appear on just one side of the body. Ask the patient to raise both arms above their head; if one arm begins to fall, it may indicate a stroke. Also, drooping on one side of the mouth when smiling can be a sign of a stroke.

Vision disturbances in one or both eyes. The patient may suddenly experience blurred or dimmed vision in one or both eyes, or may see double.

Headache.A stroke may be accompanied by a sudden, severe headache. This headache can be associated with vomiting, dizziness, and altered consciousness.

Difficulty walking. The patient experiencing a stroke may stumble, lose balance, or have difficulty controlling movement.

Causes

There are two main causes of stroke. Ischemic stroke occurs due to a blockage in one of the arteries in the brain. Hemorrhagic stroke, on the other hand, happens when there is a leak or rupture in a blood vessel within the brain. Some patients may experience a temporary interruption of blood flow to the brain, known as a transient ischemic attack (TIA), which does not cause any permanent symptoms.

Risk factors

There are many factors that can increase the risk of stroke. Modifiable risk factors for stroke include:

Lifestyle risk factors

Overweight or obesity.

Physical inactivity.

Excessive alcohol consumption.

Use of illicit drugs such as cocaine or methamphetamine.

Medical risk factors.

High blood pressure.

Smoking cigarettes or exposure to secondhand smoke.

High cholesterol levels.

Diabetes.

Obstructive Sleep Apnea

Cardiovascular disease, including heart failure, heart defects, heart infections, or arrhythmias, such as atrial fibrillation.

A personal or family history of strokes, heart attacks, or transient ischemic attacks (TIA).

COVID-19 infection.

Complications

A stroke can sometimes cause temporary or permanent disabilities. The complications vary depending on the duration of blood flow interruption to the brain and the affected area. Complications may include:

Loss of muscle movement, also known as paralysis.Paralysis may affect one side of the body, or the person may lose control over specific muscles, such as the muscles on one side of the face or one of the arms.

Difficulty speaking or swallowing.A stroke may affect the muscles of the mouth and throat, making it difficult to speak clearly, swallow, or eat. It may also cause language difficulties, including problems with speaking, understanding speech, reading, or writing.

Memory loss or difficulty thinking. Many people who have had a stroke experience memory loss. Others may have difficulty with thinking, reasoning, judgment, and understanding concepts.

Emotional symptoms.People who have had a stroke may have greater difficulty controlling their emotions, and some may develop depression.

Pain.Pain, numbness, or other unusual sensations may occur in parts of the body affected by a stroke. If the stroke causes loss of sensation in the left arm, there may be an uncomfortable tingling feeling in that arm.

Changes in behavior and self-care.People who have had a stroke may become more isolated from society and may also need assistance with self-care and performing daily tasks.

Prevention

Many stroke prevention methods are the same as those used for heart disease prevention. General healthy lifestyle recommendations include:

Controlling high blood pressure,It is one of the most important measures you can take to reduce the risk of stroke. If you have previously had a stroke, lowering blood pressure may help prevent a transient ischemic attack or another stroke. Lifestyle changes and medications are typically required to treat high blood pressure.

Reduce the amount of cholesterol and saturated fats in the diet.Reducing the amounts of cholesterol and fats—especially saturated and trans fats—in your diet can help reduce the buildup of fats in the arteries. If you cannot control your cholesterol levels through diet alone, you may need cholesterol-lowering medications.

Quitting smoking.Smoking increases the likelihood of stroke in both smokers and non-smokers exposed to secondhand smoke. Therefore, quitting smoking helps reduce the risk of stroke.

Control of diabetes.A healthy diet, exercise, and weight loss can help keep blood sugar levels within a healthy range. If lifestyle factors are not enough to control blood sugar, medication may be prescribed to manage diabetes.

Maintaining a healthy weight.Excess weight contributes to other risk factors associated with stroke, such as high blood pressure, cardiovascular diseases, and diabetes.

Following a diet rich in fruits and vegetables.Consuming five or more servings of fruits or vegetables daily may help reduce the risk of stroke. Additionally, adopting a Mediterranean diet, which emphasizes olive oil, fruits, nuts, vegetables, and whole grains, may also be beneficial.

Regular exercise.Exercise reduces the risk of stroke in several ways; it can lower blood pressure, increase good cholesterol levels, and improve overall vascular and heart health. It also helps with weight loss, diabetes management, and stress reduction. Aim to gradually increase exercise until you reach at least 30 minutes of moderate-intensity physical activity most days of the week or every day.

Moderation in alcohol consumption, if you do not quit it entirely.Drinking large amounts of alcohol increases the risk of high blood pressure and both ischemic and hemorrhagic strokes. Alcohol can also interact with the medications you take. On the other hand, moderate or small amounts of alcohol may help prevent ischemic strokes and reduce blood clotting. This small or moderate amount equals one drink per day. However, it is important to consult with a healthcare professional to determine what is suitable for your condition.

Treatment of obstructive sleep apnea.Obstructive sleep apnea is a sleep disorder that causes breathing to stop for short periods multiple times during sleep. A healthcare provider may recommend a sleep study if you have symptoms of obstructive sleep apnea. One of the treatments for this condition is using a device that provides positive airway pressure through a mask to keep the airway open during sleep.

Abstaining from drug use. Some illicit drugs, such as cocaine and methamphetamine, are confirmed risk factors associated with transient ischemic attacks or strokes.

[36
53,54,52,55,56,57,58,59
post-6272","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-36","tag-53","tag-54","tag-52","tag-55","tag-56","tag-57","tag-58","tag-59
["GET
